Unpacking Protein Analysis

Proteins are complex molecules essential for life and can be identified by using a technique called Western blot. This technique allows scientists to identify proteins of interest, which helps them determine how biomaterials interact with the body.

Not to be Overlooked: Cytotoxicity Testing of Biomaterials and Medical Devices

Biomaterials are materials used in medical devices, and cytotoxicity testing is performed on biomaterials to see how they affect mammalian cells. This is important to test because biomaterials can cause cell death and lead to inflammatory responses if not tested properly. If a biomaterial doesn't meet the standard, additional testing is required. ‍

Biomaterial Genotoxicity Assessment

When developing medical devices and other biomaterials, it's critical to determine how the material will interact with human cells. Genotoxicity tests like the Ames test measure the potential of a biomaterial to cause genetic damage in human cells. If modified bacteria grow on the plates without nutrients, then a genetic mutation has occurred and it's a genotoxic biomaterial. If not, the biomaterial is safe.
